The World Outside Her Door

We're in the middle of a bad weather stretch of days - rain and chilly temperatures. My tomato plants are not pleased. The weekend promises better things though, and in anticipation I've updated kolokolo a bit. I widened my template to make room for bigger pictures, changed the colors (yet again), and added a new, probably temporary, header. Funny how a little sprucing up can make everything feel cheery again!
All the photos in this collage are from May and a particularly valiant sunny day. C, if you can't see her, is standing in our building's hallway about to head out. I made sure to be armed with my camera that day because I knew the light would be beautiful on the buildings. They are all from the late 19th, early 20th century, which was when our neighborhood really came into its own. I particularly like these two towers and how different they are. One of them is a water tower and one a church tower. Can you tell which is which?

Lynn is right - the Vinohrady Water Tower is the beautiful neo-renaissance building on the left, and the Congregational Hussite Church is on the right. Wikipedia has a pretty good article on the Hussites here.

There are some cool water towers in Prague. Here's the one in Liben http://www.hrady.cz/index.php?OID=1999

Excellent! And then there is the water treatment plant in Podoli which looks like it could be a parliament building: http://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soubor:Podolsk%C3%A1_vod%C3%A1rna,_z_Podolsk%C3%A9_od_JV.jpg

The one on the left reminds me of Water Tower Place in Chicago, so I'm guessing it's the water tower. The one on the right looks like a lot of the modern churches around here. Do tell! (Your hallway is gorgeous!)

Ha, Lynn you are absolutely right. I thought someone might be slightly tempted by the cup sitting on top of the tower on the right and vote it the water tower :-). But it is actually the chalice for the protestant church here and an old Hussite symbol.

Now I need to google hussite.

Weather lousy here so I might need to update my blog header too!

Do you know that I love to see that you have updated your blog (in google reader) because I know I will see beautiful photographs of a very different part of the world and read about things I would never normally come across?

Mary, I have the exact same feeling when I see an update from you too!

I love the new look, it's 7.45am here and I'm sitting here in my pyjamas and smiling because I love the new look. Oh, it's been raining and grey here for a week.

C really does live in a castle. I knew it.

Thanks guys, I'm really pleased with it too and it wasn't that tricky to do! If anyone else wants a wider format, just let me know and I can walk you through it.

Eleanor, you should see the hallways in other Prague buildings, they cast ours in the shade. I'll try to sneak my camera in places and take a sampling!

I do like your new header--the colors and the pretty buildings.
