First Day

On the first day of school,* moments pass by lightning quick. Emotions change just as fast.
a. A boy can't help but get excited when he's all dressed up and ready to go!
b. He's joining the big world - time to eat his breakfast just like Dada.
c. J gives C a brotherly ok on her school outfit. It's her first day too! (3rd grade already.)
d. But to calm his nerves, some guitar strumming seems just right.
e. There are moments where the big world seems a little too big.
f. A talk in the coat room with his babysitter (his true love) cheers him up.
g. After all there are trains to try out.
h. And wait, there's a car!
i. In no time at all, he's made a friend. Bonding over the tool table already.

* Nursery school

Great pictures! Did they also go back to school for about two hours today? K took a first-grader to class (it's a 9th grade job) and then their teacher took roll, and then they left. A little weird, but I think it's a nice way to ease back in, too.

Oh he can't be going to school already, even nursery school, he was only a baby five minutes ago.

I can certainly sympathise with e.

Caroline went for one hour, James for a bit longer so he could get used to the teachers and they could introduce him to snack time. The teachers told us that once they've got a kid happily going to snack time, he'll come back to school much more easily. Who knew?

Did K start at 9? We didn't know about it, so C arrived at 7:30. I'm writing this down for next year!

I know, it's crazy that he is such a big boy. I was slightly tearful about it last night as I thought I'd miss the chaos in the mornings (nice echoes into my office, with occasional visits). The morning goes so fast though that I think I'll be just fine ;-).

Awww. I loved these pics and the narrative. Especially the narrative. I'll be it must have felt like a series of frames for you, but not James. Big new world for a brave little guy.

Diane, I think you're right - he came home and took a long nap afterwards, all the newness wore him right out.

His excitement to grab hold of this day just pours off the page! And that 3rd grader looks so grown up--hope it's a great year for both.

Oh the adorable cuteness of your children. Look at your big boy. And Caroline, Caroline!! Gosh time flies.

Thanks GG and Eleanor! I agree - they are growing up by leaps and bounds!

The French have a word for it: la rentrée and they're pretty miserable with it. Posters go up in the stores advertiising blazers, set-squares and gi-normous satchels two or three days after the summer hols start. But then the poor kids are probably required to talk in Alexandrines in July and August. Thank God I was incorrigibly unteachable.
