Hapu

There is a cocktail bar we love here, called Hapu. Even after 8 years of drop by visits, we still don't know where its name comes from, but to us Hapu means cool atmosphere, drinks that deserve to show up on a dessert menu, and lots of memories. I've still never played the giant guitar yet though.

Happy Weekend!

"Extended family", particularly if it's run by Australians.

Or it could be a nonsense word.

I really should get to Prague and visit you. You know all the cool-sounding places.

Looks fab! But how have you resisted the giant guitar all these years? K x

What a cozy place! I love the big basket above the huge guitar.

Knowing the meaning behind its name makes it even better!

Sounds like a Japanese verse form! What a delicious looking place, I love the colours...

You are the only living American who talks cheerfully about cocktails. Does Hapu rise to a challenge? Try them out with an invitation to match some of Old Mr Boston's sage prescriptions for happiness. Just back from the Languedoc where the temperatures reduced us to rosé and Leffe blonde (almost, but not quite, as good as anonymous pivo in 1965 Yugoslavia).

A, you come to town, we head to Hapu. It's a date.

K, I blame the cushy Hapu sofas for why I have not yet played the guitar - once sunk truly settled.

Lynn, Hapu used to be the only place in town where we could find exotic fruit (like kiwi! and fresh pineapple!) Times have changed tremendously since then, but they still have their fruit basket and I am fond of it too.

Ee, it does, doesn't it? We'll take you back next time you're in town.

Lucy, the colors are particularly charming in the winter, when you step down from the cold and gray into its coziness.

BB, when it comes to the classics, no one in town mixes a martini like Will. He was raised on Old Mr. Boston, though, so that could explain things. That said, we can recommend Hapu's OK Tokyo, Rusty Nail, Sidecar, Chocomint, Beam Me Up Scotty, and Banana Mama...at least off the top of my head!

That guitar looks amazing -- does anyone ever pick it up? The cherry in the bottom of that cocktail looks pretty good, too.

The owner/operator/head barman, Martin, told me that Hapu means 'family' in Maori. When I first went to Hapu, I thought the name of the bar was "OPEN", as that sign was the most visible one. I thought that OPEN was a brilliant name for a bar, since that is the most important question about any bar - is it open?!
